Aubury & Co is an interior design studio in Ponteland, a few miles north-west of Newcastle city centre, past the airport, where the city gives way to Northumberland. The studio has been there since 2005, trading for many years as Aubury Interiors, and most of the homes it has designed are in the city and the villages around it.
Three of the whole homes we can show you in full are in Gosforth: Montagu, Springfield and Sycamore. Between them they cover a Victorian house given a dark, lit heart, a classic English home held in heritage and heft, and a contemporary house built on contrast. Every curtain, pelmet, cushion and headboard in them came from our own workroom in Ponteland.

Where in the City We Work
The whole of Newcastle upon Tyne, and the places closest to us first.
Gosforth and Jesmond. The Victorian and Edwardian suburbs north of the centre, where all three of the Gosforth homes on this site are. Both are covered by conservation areas, and we have written a separate guide to what those houses are made of and what they ask of a room.
The city centre and the Quayside. Flats, town houses and converted buildings. A single room or a whole apartment is as welcome as a whole house, and the workroom is used to windows that are taller than they are wide.
The edge of the city. Ponteland and Darras Hall on the north-west edge, where the studio is, and the villages beyond. The Darras Hall byelaws, explained plainly, for anyone planning changes there.
Further out, we work up the Tyne Valley to Corbridge and on the Northumberland coast. If you are somewhere else in the North East, ask. It is usually a short drive.

What a Newcastle House Asks of Its Rooms
Plain observations from three whole homes in the city. Not rules, and every house is different.
The city’s older houses are tall. Bay windows, high ceilings, long sashes and, in the best of them, plaster cornices and ceiling roses that have survived a century of paint. They take colour well and they punish curtains that stop short. At Springfield the deep bays were dressed in Roman blinds and patterned pelmets that read as tailoring; at Montagu a full wall of dark built-in shelves was lit so the living room had a heart after dark.
The newer houses on the northern edge of the city are lower and wider, with more glass and less ornament. They ask for warmth and texture rather than pattern. At Sycamore that meant slatted timber, a horizontal fire, tweed and rust in the bedrooms, and a hall lit like a stage.
In a flat, the windows and the storage decide everything else. Made-to-measure blinds and curtains that fit the reveal exactly, joinery that uses the height of the room, and one strong idea carried through rather than several competing ones.
If the house is in a conservation area
Gosforth, South Jesmond, Jesmond Dene and several other parts of the city are conservation areas. That concerns the outside and the setting; the inside is yours to change unless the building is listed. How We Work in the City
The studio has been in Ponteland since 2005, trading for many years as Aubury Interiors: the same team, the same founder and the same telephone number today. Cheryl founded the studio and still designs with us. Lauren, Inchbald trained, is Partner and Principal Designer.
Montagu was Lauren’s from first sketch to the afternoon the shelves were dressed; Springfield and Sycamore were led together, alongside architects and builders. When a project is in the city, the studio is close enough to be on site when it matters and far enough out to have its own workroom, which made the drapery, pelmets and headboards for all three homes.

Curtains and Blinds
Made to measure for each window, with the cloth chosen alongside the rest of the room. Full-length curtains, Roman blinds and pelmets, sized to tall sashes, deep bays and apartment glass.

Common Questions
Which parts of Newcastle do you cover?
All of it. Gosforth, Jesmond and the northern suburbs are closest to the studio and all three of the Gosforth homes on this site are there; the city centre, the Quayside and the rest of Tyneside are a short drive. We also work across Northumberland and the wider North East.
Where is the studio?
In Ponteland, Northumberland NE20, a few miles north-west of the city centre near the airport. Visits are by appointment, and for most projects we come to you.
Do you take on flats and single rooms in the city?
Yes. Montagu, Springfield and Sycamore were whole homes, but we also take on single rooms and consultations, and a flat in the city is as welcome as a house. A window that has never been dressed properly is a good place to start. See our Services page.
Can you work with our architect or builder?
Yes. Springfield and Sycamore were both led alongside architects and builders, from the first conversation through to final styling, and that is how Lauren prefers to work on a full-scale project.
