Aubury & Co is an interior design studio in Ponteland, Northumberland. It has been here since 2005, trading for many years as Aubury Interiors: the same team, the same founder and the same telephone number today. Most of the homes we design are within half an hour of the studio, and many of them are in the county itself.
Two of the whole homes we can show you in full are here. The Northumberland Project is a period family home in Corbridge, taken from plans to finished rooms. Bamburgh is a cottage on the coast, brought in from the wind with sage panelling, rattan, brass and linen. The drapery, headboards, cushions and upholstery for both came from our own workroom in Ponteland.

Ponteland and Darras Hall. Where the studio and the workroom are. Darras Hall runs under its own Trust Deed and byelaws, and our plain guide to the Darras Hall byelaws is there for anyone planning changes to a house on the estate.

What a Northumberland House Asks of Its Rooms
Plain observations from homes across the county. Not rules, and every house is different.
Many of them are old, and many are protected. Northumberland has around 5,562 listed buildings by the county council’s count, and 70 conservation areas, Ponteland, Corbridge and Bamburgh among them. Listing covers the inside of a house as well as the outside, so a cornice, a staircase or a run of panelling is protected just as the front elevation is. Stone walls need to breathe. Traditional houses were built from natural materials that manage moisture by absorbing and releasing it slowly, which is why the wrong modern paint can end in damp behind the decoration. We have written about lime and breathable finishes in stone houses for anyone decorating an older house here.
The light is northern. It is cooler and flatter than the light in a paint catalogue, which is why colours need testing on the actual wall. Our piece on sage green in a Northumberland light is a good place to start.
On the coast, the weather comes inside. Fabrics and finishes that cope with salt, sand and strong sun last longer by the sea, and the Bamburgh cottage was finished with that in mind.

How We Work Across the County
Cheryl founded the studio in 2005 and still designs with us. Lauren, who trained at the Inchbald School of Design in London and worked in two London studios before returning North, is Partner and Principal Designer. Cheryl led The Northumberland Project from the earliest planning conversations through to final styling, alongside architects and builders; Lauren designed the Bamburgh cottage.
Because the workroom is ours and it is in Ponteland, the curtains, blinds, headboards and cushions for a Northumberland house are made a short drive from where they will hang.

Common Questions
Which parts of Northumberland do you cover?
All of it. Ponteland and Darras Hall are on our doorstep, and we work up the Tyne Valley to Corbridge and Hexham, on the coast at Bamburgh and Alnmouth, and across Morpeth and the rest of the county. We also work in Newcastle upon Tyne and the wider North East.
Where is the studio?
In Ponteland, Northumberland NE20. Visits are by appointment, and for most projects we come to you.
Do you work on listed and period houses?

Can you make curtains and blinds for old windows?
Yes. Everything is made to measure in our own workroom in Ponteland, sized to tall sashes, deep bays and awkward reveals.
